Holly Church
In rural churches sometimes a run-down on church expenditure is given: during
the year. A young priest who had modern ideas and approaches felt that this was
not appropriate unless the reading out of the balance-sheet was done in prayer
form. He instructed the congregation to intone Amen after each item read out.
The reading went something like this:
To the sacristan .... £50 Amen.
To the cleaner......£45 Amen.
To the gardener.....£65 Amen.
... and so it continued until the priest read:
To the organist.....£675, when the congretation sang:
"There's no business like show business.'
