Common Market
At the time of Ireland's entry to the Common Market it was felt that our custom
of driving on the left-hand side of the road would be confusing to our European
neighbours. A Corkman proposed a revolutionary new scheme to make our transition
of driving on the other side of the road a little easier. He proposed that the
change-over be made very gradually and that for the first few weeks it should
apply to heavy lorries only.
